How Innercircuit Started

In 2006, when Michelle Christensen was living in an apartment community in San Francisco, she embarked on a mad search every month for her buried checkbook so she could pay her rent. Since she paid every other bill online, rent literally became the last check she was relying on the postal service to deliver each month. Michelle quickly realized that writing and sending that single check was only one hassle. Communicating with her property manager was a tedious process that never guaranteed answers to her questions and concerns. And because she didn’t know her neighbors, there was no one she could turn to for help. After growing weary of leaving voicemails and spending weeks tracking down help with maintenance in her home, all while anxiously hoping her check would arrive on time, Michelle began to wonder why she was renting at that particular property when there was a plethora of choices at her fingertips. She also realized that she was not alone, other renters shared her frustrations—and that properties were losing business and seeing a negative impact on the bottom line as turnover and vacancy rates increased.

After months of research, mapping and engineering, she came up with a win/win for residents and property managers, building what would eventually become Innercircuit, Inc. Within the first couple of months she easily convinced her property management company to beta Innercircuit.

Michelle’s personal experience as a renter led her to create easy, quick tools to pay online anytime and communicate with management. As she created a superior product that residents would want to use weekly, which eventually translate into the highest participation for her property management clients, Michelle immediately made that goal the foundation of Innercircuit’s success.
